We will be owners of a Standard in three weeks (had a miniature and toy previously)- I came across this site looking for information on the Standard, and so enjoyed reading the 'diary' - however I was alarmed to read the information on vaccination. We lost our beloved red toy two days ago from heart failure at only 7 years old, and I can't help but wonder if her problems began with a booster given last summer! We had thought she'd not been the same since she was speyed a few weeks after the booster - but reading this has made me wonder, as she was even on low dose steroids for a skin complaint. Glad to have this information. Thanks.
Hi, wonderful site! I have owned standards for over 20 years, currently i have saskia a black bitch who has just produced 7 wonderful puppies, all black, for her second litter. A great informative and helpful site. We live in the Bahamas. My son won Jr Showmanship the past 2 years with my sister's Pomeranian. This year he got his very own dog, a beautiful cream Standard Poodle named Splash. We have to learn as much as we can thru the internet, so thank you for all your help! Showing and caring for a poodle is much different but we love our wonderful girl.

What I was looking for was an average height for standards, but most sites give only the 15" minimum. If anyone cares to respond to this question, I'd appreciate it. I was searching for Napoleon and this site came up. I said to myself "Well Napoleon and poodles are both french let me check this out" and your site rocks.Great poodle site.Keep it going.But as a suggestion you should have pics that go with each breed standard so that the person(s) could figure the look their looking for since just words ain't enough like the expression goes "A picture is worth a thousand words."
I have just been reading Poly's diary for the first time and note that it finished way back in May. I do hope your lovely dog is still doing well.
I've had 3 min poodles and they all had difficult tums. To my astonishment I found that cooked, fresh chicken was one culprit and eventually gave that up. I found that cheapie brand 'Butchers' seemed to do the trick with added vegetables and small-bite mixer biscuits.
Sadly, my latest poodle has gone blind with PRA at the age of nine. I've only had her just on two years and it is such a shame. But she manages quite well by using her nose and ears. I just have to be careful not to move the furniture around.

Hi Mike! Promised I'd have a look and I have and I think it's great! Well done & keep up the good work. On the 'new' parvo like virus, I lost one of my dogs to it in Nov 1999. He was litter brother to my pretty little Coco (Rhyme and Rhythm) and was a fabulous dog. Although only 10 months when I lost him I still miss him. This disease is devastating. Anyway, good luck for the future!

i have a standard poodle and we just love her. They are great dogs.
We have two standard poodles - "Tasha" Montravia Guns Fantasia - a black bitch aged 5, and "Treacle" Iatka Drambuie Double aged 1 last week. They are completely insane (and so are we now). They work as a team opening cupboards, fridge and freezer and eating anything from butter and sugar to frozen haddock. They are very lively and great company.

have often viewed your site and enjoyed Poly`s news and read the health notes with care. I have a smashing cream girl of 4 months called Millie, she is starting to become a bit more sensible now and we all adore her. Standards are not a hobby but a complete addiction!

I congratulate you on this web site, it is the best one about standard poodles I have ever found. I too own a male cream standard poodle he is the first dog I have ever owned and my husband and I adore him.We don't show him but we do go to obedience training and he is doing very well.Our lives would be totally empty without him and we only holiday if we can take him with us. This year we are going to centre parks in sherwood forest. Good luck at crufts, the last one to win was Ayrton's great grandad. Thanks again.

An interesting site. Can you please tell me the following? I am looking for a medium to large dog to act as a hearing dog for me. I would be clipping the dog down to a very short clip and getting it desexed. It would be obedience trained and would attend work with me every day so will basically never be left alone. It would be required to alert me to doorbell, people calling me, microwave, kettle boiling and smoke alarm. I am able to walk it a minimum of 12 km every day (subject of course to its age) with a maximum of 20 km (7-12 miles) Do you believe that the Standard would be suitable for such a task?
first i would like to say what a brilliant web site this is and it offers some brilliant advice to poodle owners. 1 year ago i bought my first standard poodle (Henry). he was very confident to say the least and after destroying the house, being EXPELLED from training classes, and showing agressive signs we decided to take him to a dog phsycologist. this worked extremly well and we would like to point out a peice of equiptment that was used during his training, a collar called MASTER PLUS. it is a device that is controlled by remote control, and when the dog misbehaves you press the button on the remote control and it sprays water up on to his chin. this is a painless and harmful procedure but works wonders for us and many other people who we know that had similar problems. Henry is now a happy, loving, well behaved part of our family and we are very proud of what he has grown up to be like. so all of you out there who feel like they cant cope with thoses naughty poodle puppies dont give up we didnt
