Clipper Blades

Postby tomei » Thu Sep 06, 2007 6:46 pm

I have at least three blades that I have bought new which simply don't go through the coat: 3, 7 & 5. I use an Oster A5 Dual Speed clipper and the blades are Oster. Problem is I bought them at Discover Dogs and can't remember the seller.

I now have 4 SP's and although not great at grooming I do bath and clip them every 5-6 weeks. I have tried aligning them by using the screws, oiling them etc but nothing seems to work. I am loathed to send them off for sharpening/repair as effectively they have never been used. Any suggestions as to how I can get them to work?

I had one of those dual speed clippers, Tomei, and found that within a short time, they only worked on one speed, eventually i got rid of them, i might add, i only used them on the same number of dogs that you have, so like John, i would query the clippers! in my opinion keep away from dual speed.
At least you will be able to use the blades on any other make of clipper.

The clipper is about 2 years old I guess but the odd thing is the nbr 10, 15 and my old nbr 3 blades work ok.

I'll buy a new clipper and see if I have any joy else I guess I'll have to get the blades checked out.

Thanks for your replies, Jan

The full tooth blades can struggle to get through an "dirty " coat.
If you have a No: 7 (as to a No: 7F) se if that will go through better. Then thats part of the problem.
But the dual speeds have always had a problem,as Bette says.
A new Oster single speed should give you no trouble with any blade.
A No: 5 or 7 should go through the bodycoat.

Jenni,
You say" I have just bathed,dried ........... "
It is recomended that you clip first,as,especialy the face could rash if clipped "clean".

Best clipper: there are many on the market ,the single speed Oster is a great favorite, and if serviced regularly ,will last you a life time.
Use Cool Lube to oil the blades.
Body Blades No:7 (summer) No:5 (winter)
Face,feet and tail No: 30,or 40
Grooming books for the English market.
DVDS are not so easy to follow as you go along ,but some one might know of a usefull one.

I consider myself an experienced groomer doing my own dogs for 20 years but have to say I wouldn't want to use a 40 blade, and would be very careful using a 30 on a white or brown as their skins are more sensitve than the blacks.

I now only use a 10 on my old white standard, and she was a show dog and is used to being clipped regularly, but in her old age has a sensitive skin, as did my old brown girl.

Jenni I use the Moser Arco rechargeable clipper.
This is light and very easy to handle, much more so than the Oster.
It has an adjustable blade which goes from about a 10 to a 50.
You cant sharpen them but replacements are cheaper than single size Osters.
I use these for face, feet and tail but an Oster A5 single speed with a 5 or 7F blade to do the bodies on my Pets.
I still have the body blade that you gave me all those years ago Yorksire Lass !

Jenni, I also use the single speed but prefer Andis. For the face feet and tail I use SASSI cordless clippers. These are very like Laube speed feed. I bought them from ebay for £65 and they have been brilliant.

I love my Moser Arco too, have Aescalap clippers as well, but tend to use my Osters for body.
Goodness Mike had forgotten all about that blade!!!!!!!

Providing you use your finer blades BEFORE the bath ,the rashing should not appear.
Our older white std.is quite blotchy on the face, with darker patches of pigment, old age and marks left by beastly swedish ticks and we use a 10 for her.
Keep a bottle of mens aftershave or witchhazel by you and if you se any reddening of the skin splash on the lotion, avoiding the eyes of course

I used to have an Oster but purchased a FABULOUS Moser SWITCHBLADE. Now ALL my blades work and I can't remember the last time I sent them for sharpening! it's a very comfortable clipper to hold and work with.
